Excellence and Unity

As all pastors should, I pray for our church daily.  I always want to be obedient to God’s direction for our church.

I keep getting two words concerning me personally and our church.  Those two words are excellence and unity.

Where there is no excellence or unity there will be disorder.  Where there is disorder there will be no growth.  All of us should always want to grow. And we want our churches to be growing.

The dictionary defines excellence as the state of excelling; to be better or to reach an expected goal.

I believe in the eyes of God it means to be above and beyond the norm and to demonstrate the best.

Unity means to be united; oneness; harmony and agreement.

Excellence is achieved by knowing what is considered good and doing what we need to do to achieve that and beyond.  Excellence can be achieved by doing what is needed to be done to achieve it.

It will usually involve diligence.

Unity comes through knowledge and obedience.  You need know what is believed and what is expected of you.  Once you have that knowledge, you are submitted and obedient to what you should believe and what is expected of you.

God expects us to be in agreement with His word.  Once we all agree on that word we are in once accord.

Discord is when someone does not agree and verbalizes their disagreement with others.  Discord is disagreement and lack of harmony.

Proverbs 6: 19 says that discord is one of the seven things the Lord hates.  “He that sows discord among the brethren”, which is an abomination to God.

Proverbs. 6: 14 – 15 concerning those who sow discord: “therefore shall his calamity come suddenly and suddenly he shall be broken without remedy.”

How can we prevent disunity when it comes to what we believe.?

We need to consistently teach the truth of God’s word.  Ephesian 4: 11 – 14 states that the role of the ministry gifts such as pastor/teachers is to teach God’s word that we may all be in unity and not be tossed about with all kinds of winds of doctrine.

If you do not agree with what is being taught by your Pastor, but they are teaching the Word of God according to the Bible, submit to that truth.  The worse thing you can do is voice your disagreement with others.  That will cause discord among the brethren.

James 3: 16 says, “For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.”

We should all strive to be the best we can be for the Lord.  We are His witnesses to the unbeliever.  We should also strive to be in unity with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

If you have confusion in your life, make sure you are not holding criticism or judgment in your life.  We all need to demonstrate the best we can be for the Lord.

Make sure you know the vision of your church and be in agreement with that vision.  Don’t be a sower of discord.

We can attract others to Jesus in our current world of fear and hopelessness by obeying what Jesus said would show the world who were truly His disciples, by the love we have for one another.
